Wife of Mischief
03:14
|
|||
I won’t be left behind
I won’t be buried for the dozenth time
I’m saying, I won’t die!
I’m going to live without the starry sky
So spare me your mysteries!
You fatal jewelry…
Your wreathes,
Your hands, that reach down to me
A beast
Who claims he "loves me truly"
I won’t be fleeced
I’m leaving you, see?
I won’t be left behind
No, I won’t be buried for the dozenth time
I’m saying, I won’t die!
I’m going to live without the starry sky
Wife of mischief
Daughter of trouble
Sister, misfit
Devil in the eyes of a devil
Wife of mischief
Daughter of trouble
Sister, misfit
Devil in the eyes of a devil
(wife of mischief) I won’t be left behind
daughter of trouble
(sister, misfit) nah, I won't be buried
devil in the [eyes/arms] of a devil
(wife of mischief) and if this ruin's mine
daughter of trouble
(sister, misfit)
well, it's what I married.

oh, helen--
they've told me about you
made it out like i'd like to be like you.
said "she had the face
that launched a thousand ships"
i do not seek this
nor do i wish it
i doubt you did,
either.
oh, helen
they've told me about you.
they write what they have grown too shy to speak
write, "she was a young thing..."
write, "golden and shining..."
wrote like a trophy,
oh, helen...
you never sailed a single ship.
there is no power
in this supposed control (she had the face)
and yet, you're blamed
for all the pain that they sowed (a thousand ships)
a single phrase,
that weight you never could throw.
yet, every warrior acts like he's owed
(doesn't he,)
helen (?)
they've told me about you.
oh, helen!
i do not think they _think._
your heart is not forgot...
your hand, no longer sought.
oh, helen,
i'm sure you'd sail a steady ship, oh helen
i'm sure you'd sail... a steady ship.

(oh)
would you call me the devil, if you
saw it in my eyes? would you
cast me to the floor, so wicked…
i don’t think i could cry, and if you
kill all your daughters, if you’ve no
mercy on your sons, if you
let the red-tide waters, if you
let these waters run
well, i’ve heard this before
i’ve heard this, i
i’ve heard this before
i’ve heard this
i, i’ve heard this before
i’ve heard this, i
i’ve heard this before
i’ve heard…
that the devil is the same as me
and angels who would greet the sea, then
come to rest down at my feet.
their hair’s the same, but their eyes don’t bleed
and the devil’s never met her match
her eyes are wide, her voice is cracked
and if you slept without a bat,
i think you could be glad of that
well the devil is the same as me
his body’s bursting at the seams
his eyes are wide, his words are mean
i’m jealous, i’m not so obscene, well.
the devil’s never met their match
the doors are locked, the windows’s latched, but
if i slept without a bat
i wouldn’t worry ‘bout all that
'cause i’ve heard this, i
i’ve heard this before
i’ve heard this
i, i’ve heard this before
i’ve heard this, i
i’ve heard this before
i’ve heard…
so why
make me the devil? think i
outta play the rebel? think i like
sleeping in the stable? you think there’s
blood, beneath my nails?
so why
must we be the devils? can’t you
see she's child? can’t you
let me live once wild? won’t you say
that i’m worthwhile,
would
you.
...
call me the devil, if you
saw it in my eyes? would you,
cast me to the floor, so wicked…
i don’t think i could cry, and if you
kill all your daughters, if you’ve no
mercy on your sons, if you
let the red-tide waters, if you
let these waters run…
…
well, i’ve heard it before. ✦

Wife of Ruin
03:38
|
|||
Walking this strict, straight line
Sure, I’m scared,
To touch on the divine,
To lay this pain beside.
It’s patterned into my mind
But I’ve strayed,
I’ve strayed too many times,
To set the thing aside
And I want to lay,
To lay this pain on backwards!
I want to twist it over,
I want to see it reversed.
I want to portray
Woman more than the betrayal
The blood beneath the nails…
The iron before the male
For if the myth
Is made by man
Then it’s the man
Who picks the knife.
If it’s the god
Whose gaze does graze
Then it’s the girl...
Who takes his eyes.
Walking this strict, straight line
Sure, I’m scared,
To touch on the divine,
To lay this pain beside…
The punishment set aside
For figure fair,
For hair that caught the light,
Both kept and left behind,
The horn, the stone, the knife,
The deathbed for the wife
(don't look down) And I want to lay,
(on me now) To lay this pain on backwards! [i won't be left behind,]
(i won't be cowed) I want to twist it over,
(i won't be crowned.) I want to see it reversed [i have the horn, the knife, myself, this time.]
(don't look down.) I want to stand
(at me now) On the wreck of desecration! [and if this ruin's MINE]
(i won't be cowed) I want to desecrate him
(i won't be crowned.) I’ll be the wife of ruin [see, keep it in a sheath, not in]
[my side.]
Cause it’s the myth
(if he reaches out...) That makes the man…
But I’m afraid
(i have no doubt.) Of no man’s knife
And god forbid
(oh, don't look down...) He’s heaven-sent
Cause if he is…
I’ll take his eyes.
Oh, god forbid
He’s heaven-sent
Cause if he is…
I’ll take his life.

Red Upon the Sails
03:09
|
|||
is there blood beneath your nails?
sun casting gold upon the sails
are you waiting on an answer
that doesn’t come?
and as you’re standing by the water
gods, i too have thought...
but i’m still waiting on an answer,
that doesn’t come.
and as you’re standing in the water—a thousand frames i’ve seen a dozen times and words i’ve heard before—that this is the betrayal,
it’s the blood beneath my nails
it’s a train run off the rails
but i’ve been this way before.
and this is where i’d end it,
i would twist it, i would bend it
i would change the way it’s written
‘cause i’ve sung this song before
do we really have to do this?
just to raise it, must you bruise it,
god,/? i hate the way it’s written
‘cause i wrote this song before
and as you’re kneeling in the water
(gods, i, too, have thought.)
but i’m still waiting on an answer…
and i'm not sure that it comes.
is there blood beneath your nails?
sun sinking red upon the sails
are you still waiting on an answer… ? ✧
