In the past, while considering the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, I often found myself frustrated by what seemed like a tale of pointless tragedy. The only way for Orpheus to retrieve Eurydice is blind trust--and he will fail. Blind trust is no basis for a relationship. I tried to resolve this through my writing by using the story as a metaphor for a relationship that lacks communication. In “Eurydice in the Light” the speaker, Orpheus, urges Eurydice to make contact; to take the outstretched hand, to “let [her] words walk into the light.”
